Mineral oil is a clear, colorless, odorless liquid derived from petroleum (crude oil) through a series of refining processes. It is a type of hydrocarbon mixture composed mainly of saturated aliphatic and cyclic hydrocarbons, with a relatively high boiling point range.
Crude oil is distilled to separate different fractions by boiling point. The fraction that becomes mineral oil is further refined through processes like hydrotreating, dewaxing, and filtration to remove impurities (such as sulfur, nitrogen compounds, and aromatic hydrocarbons), resulting in a stable, inert product.
Common Applications
1. Personal Care & Cosmetics
Found in lotions, creams, ointments, and baby oils as an emollient to moisturize and soften skin. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface.
2. Food-Grade Uses
Approved for limited food applications, such as a release agent for baking pans, a lubricant for food-processing machinery, and a coating for fresh produce to retain moisture.
3. Household Uses
Furniture polish (to condition wood and add shine), and a lubricant for door hinges or stuck zippers.
4. Industrial Uses
(1). Lubrication: Serves as a base oil for lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and metalworking fluids, used in machinery, engines, and industrial equipment (including components like filters and oil purifiers).
(2). Transformer Oil: Insulates electrical transformers and switches due to its high dielectric strength.
(3). Corrosion Protection: Used as a rust inhibitor for metal surfaces during storage or transportation.
Mineral oil, as a core medium in industrial lubrication and electrical insulation, directly impacts the safe operation of equipment due to its performance stability. However, during long-term use, mineral oil is prone to contamination with solid impurities such as metal shavings and dust, as well as moisture absorption. Oxidation can also produce deterioration products like gum deposits, leading to lubrication failure, decreased insulation performance, and even equipment malfunction.
To address different types of contamination in mineral oil, various oil Purtifiers form a complementary system: Vacuum oil purifiers, using low-temperature vacuum dehydration technology, efficiently remove moisture and gas from transformer oil and hydraulic oil, preventing insulation failure and oil emulsification; Centrifugal oil Purifiers utilize high-speed centrifugal force to quickly separate free water and large particulate impurities from mechanical lubricating oil, suitable for high-intensity operating environments such as mines and ships; and Plate and Frame oil purifiers excel at deeply retaining solid impurities in high-viscosity mineral oil, reducing costs for waste oil regeneration pretreatment.
