Transformer oil is a mineral oil obtained by distillation and refining of natural petroleum. It is a mixture of pure, stable, low-viscosity, good insulation and cooling liquid natural hydrocarbons obtained by acid-base refining of lubricating oil fractions in petroleum. It is a light yellow transparent liquid with a relative density of 0.895. The freezing point is <-45 ℃.
Main functions of transformer oil:
(1) Insulation: Transformer oil has a much higher insulation strength than air. When insulating materials are immersed in oil, they can not only improve the insulation strength, but also protect them from moisture erosion.
(2) Heat dissipation: Transformer oil has a large specific heat and is often used as a coolant. The heat generated when the transformer is running causes the oil near the core and winding to expand and rise. Through the upward and downward convection of the oil, the heat is dissipated through the radiator to ensure the normal operation of the transformer.
(3) Arc extinguishing: On oil circuit breakers and transformer on-load tap changers, arcs are generated when contacts are switched. Because transformer oil has good thermal conductivity and can separate a large amount of gas under the high temperature of the arc, it generates a large pressure, thereby improving the arc extinguishing performance of the medium and extinguishing the arc quickly.
However, transformer oil will be polluted to varying degrees due to many reasons during operation. For example, 1. Transformer oil absorbs moisture in the air, mechanical impurities and free carbon mixed in the oil during operation. 2. Transformer oil will continue to oxidize during operation, resulting in oil quality deterioration, darker color, turbid transparency, increased moisture and acid value, etc., which will reduce the insulation performance of the oil, thereby increasing the risk of equipment damage and safety accidents. Therefore, we need to filter the transformer oil on time to ensure that the oil quality meets the standards, effectively prevent transformer failures caused by oil quality problems, and thus extend the service life of the equipment.
