What is the Turbine Oil? What Type of Oil is Turbine Oil?

Definition of Turbine Oil

Turbine oil is commonly referred to as turbine oil, including gas turbine oil, steam turbine oil, etc., which are commonly used in the reduction gears, sliding bearings, and hydraulic control systems of the connected units. The main functions of turbine oil are cooling, speed regulation and lubrication.

Turbine oils are highly refined petroleum distillate oils obtained from low-sulfur waxfree crudes or sulfurous paraffinic crudes and contain various additives, such as oxidation inhibitors, anticorrosion agents, demulsifiers, foam inhibitors, and, in special cases, antiwear agents. They are characterized by a high degree of oxidation stability, good anticorrosion and demulsify-ing properties, and a low foaming capacity. Turbine oils with a viscosity of 20–23 × 10–6 m2/sec (20–23 centistokes) at 50°C are used in high-speed turbine units (3,000 rpm or higher); those with a viscosity of 28–48 × 10–6 m2/sec (28–48 centistokes) or higher are used in low-speed and high-power turbine units (turboreduc-ing units), including ship turbines.

Applications and Functions of Turbine Oil

Turbine oil is used to lubricate the bearings and auxiliary machinery in steam and hydraulic turbines, in turbopumps, and in air, gas, and refrigeration turbocompressors. Turbine oils are also used as lubricants and working fluids in various types of closed-cycle industrial machinery. All turbines, both steam and gas, have a large oil reservoir to lubricate the turbine bearings.

Turbine oil formulations are relatively simple; they are a mixture of the following ingredients: Base oil, corrosion inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, deferments, and demulsifies. Additives are blended into the base oil at low levels to protect both the oil and the turbine parts.

Turbine Oil is a very high-quality, rust and oxidation (R&O)-inhibited circulating oil developed for use in industrial steam turbines, rotary air compressors, and many other industrial applications.

High Requirements on Turbine Oil Quality

Turbine oils are subject to some detrimental factors, such as high temperature, high water contamination, hence the strict oil quality requirements are mandatory:

●good oxidation stability;

●absence of sludge formation after long use;

●no emulsification with water;

●protection of steel surfaces from corrosion.

The quality of turbine oil decreases in use due to contamination with water and particulate matter. Sludge increases the rate of additive degradation and oil aging. Using contaminated oil causes increase of temperatures, premature wear and destruction of bearings and unstable governor system operation.

According to ISO 4406 recommendations, reliable operation of turbine units can be ensured with the purity of oil 15/12 or better, i.e. with control of the amount of 3 – 25 micron particles. Oil tanks of turbine units are often equipped with 250-500 micron mesh filters. This is clearly not sufficient to ensure the required purity of turbine oil.

Always Keep the Turbine Oil at High Quality

Many clients spend over USD 50,000 or more to change their emulsified turbine oil every 2 or 4 years, but there is no money for oil purification, which costs much less.

All turbine operators should own special Turbine Oil Purification Machines to prepare turbine oil for use and to keep it clean in use.

FUOOTECH Group have designed and developed some different types of Turbine Oil Purifier Machines to deal specifically with various turbine oil.
