Harnessing The Gobi Winds: Xinjiang Hami Jiahui Wind Power Project Fully Connected To The Grid

Green power rises on the Gobi winds; a new chapter unfolds at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains!

 

Recently, with the commissioning and startup of the final turbine unit, the 200 MW Phase I wind power project of Xinjiang Hami Jiahui New Energy-constructed by PowerChina-achieved full-capacity grid connection. This milestone injects strong momentum into the refinement of Xinjiang's clean energy system and sets a new benchmark for expanding the new energy landscape in Northwest China.

Located in the Gobi region of Barkol Kazakh Autonomous County, Hami City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the project features 20 wind turbine units, each with a capacity of 10 MW, resulting in a total installed capacity of 200 MW. The project included the construction of a supporting 110 kV step-up substation and the expansion of the 220 kV Bojing Shanghu wind power collection station. Together, these facilities establish an integrated power transmission system-encompassing power collection, voltage step-up, and power delivery-thereby laying a solid foundation for stable operation. The project was constructed by the No. 11 Hydropower Bureau, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China.

 

During construction, the team faced numerous challenges, including the harsh and complex Gobi desert environment, the difficulty of hoisting massive turbine units, and restricted working conditions. Adhering to the principles of "safety first and quality foremost," the team coordinated construction schedules and implemented meticulous, full-process management. To address key technical hurdles, the team conducted multiple rounds of specialized technical discussions and plan validations in advance, inviting industry experts to the site to provide guidance and resolve technical bottlenecks. Simultaneously, they strictly enforced controls on critical procedures-such as safety technical briefings, foundation bearing capacity testing, and the verification of machinery entering the site-while monitoring Gobi weather changes in real-time to ensure the safe and efficient progress of turbine hoisting operations.

 

Furthermore, the team completed a comprehensive suite of specialized tests to high standards, including the commissioning of primary and secondary electrical equipment and withstand-voltage testing. All construction stages and equipment specifications passed acceptance inspections; the project was completed on schedule and to a high standard, successfully meeting the requirements for full-capacity grid connection. Once the project is fully operational, it will supply approximately 640 million kWh of clean electricity to the grid annually, save about 193,200 tons of standard coal, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 525,900 tons each year. This will effectively optimize the energy consumption structure in the Hami region, increase the proportion of clean energy integrated into the grid, and provide strong support for the steady, high-quality development of the local new energy industry.
