Kinematic viscosity defines a lubricant's gravitational flow resistance at a specified reference temperature, serving as the primary criterion for industrial lubricant specification and condition monitoring. For most circulating and gear lubricants used in heavy industry, testing is standardised at 40 °C and classified via ISO VG grades, such as ISO VG 220 and ISO VG 460, commonly deployed within hot rolling mill gearboxes and roller stand lubrication circuits across steel, mining and power sectors.
